Spanish banking giant BBVA has announced a remarkable achievement in its sustainable finance efforts, mobilizing a staggering €26 billion (USD.5 billion) in the second quarter of 2024 - a new record for the bank. Surpassing Ambitious Targets

BBVA's sustainable finance mobilization in Q2 2024 represents a significant step forward in the bank's ambitious sustainability goals. The bank had initially set a target of €100 billion in sustainable finance by 2025, which was later increased to €200 billion in 2021 and then further raised to the current €300 billion target in 2022. With the latest record-breaking quarter, BBVA has now facilitated a total of €252 billion towards this goal, demonstrating its ability to consistently exceed its own targets.

Driving Growth in Cleantech and Renewable Energy

The bank's impressive performance has been driven by a range of factors, including strong growth in areas such as cleantech and renewable energy. Powering Corporate and Retail Sustainability

BBVA's sustainable finance growth has been widespread, with both its Corporate and Investment Banking (CIB) unit and its retail business contributing significantly to the record-breaking performance. The CIB unit accounted for the majority of sustainable finance business in the first half of the year, with €25 billion in financing, a 32% increase. This was driven by strong performance in cleantech and renewable energy projects. Meanwhile, the retail business saw a 12% increase in sustainable business mobilization, with a particular focus on financing for hybrid and electric vehicle purchases.
